Using Rainwater Tanks
Personally I believe that everyone should have some form of rainwater storage on their property no matter where they live in the city or country.
I don’t know exactly how may years ago it was, Perhaps someone can let us know that the Brisbane City Council had the residents remove their rainwater tanks for health reasons,
Now the push in on for every household to have a rainwater tank installed to prop up Town Supplies.
You are allowed to use this supply for
- water the garden
- top up the pool
- wash the car
- flush the toilet
- run the washing machine
Growing up on a farm in Central Queensland you learnt the value of water at a very early age.
The only water we had to supply the house was from rainwater tanks . Drinking and Bathing in this water did not kill us or thousands of others that survived on it for hundreds of years.
Although I do understand the worry from pollution in the cities I still see no reason why County Town are not supposed to drink Rainwater but instead waste this liquid gold flushing the Loo.
We personally have a rainwater tap at our sink and our tanks are fitted with a diversion flow so that the first lot of water that runs off the roof does not go into the tank,. Ok we have to remember to empty this every time it rains but the process takes 2 minutes.
If you have NEVER had a glass of chilled rain water, or a cup of Coffee or Tea made on straight Rainwater you don’t know what you are missing.
People spend hundreds of dollars every year on under the sink filtration systems or bottled water rather than drink their town supply and in some cases I don’t blame them as the smell and taste of this water is horrible and enough to make you sick.
Before you run out and buy your next case of Bottled Water or new filter for your under sink filtration unit check out the cost of installing a rainwater tank. Even if you boil this water before drinking it has to work out cheaper than the other alternatives in the long run.
There are many different shapes and sizes to choose from so there is bound to be one to suit your needs and space.
Points to consider before purchasing your Tank.
- What will you use the Water for?
- Location of the tank on your property?
- Access to the site and site preparation?
- Will your tank be pump or gravity feed?
Before installing a rainwater tank, you must always check with your local council about any approvals you might need as there may be restrictions on the tank’s height or location, and you will possibly need a plumber to install pumps or connections.
Many area’s in Australia no longer have the set amount of water allocation per household with a additional charge for excess usage. Most consumers today are a user pay system so just think in the long term how much having a water tank installed could save you.
